Interior Drain Tile and Sump Pumps for Indy Basements
When water comes in at the bottom of the wall all the way around, the usual answer is a drain under the slab edge and a pump to move what it collects.
An interior drain tile system is a perforated pipe laid in gravel along the inside edge of the basement floor, feeding a sump pit and pump. Fixr's 2026 guide lists interior perimeter drains at $40–$120 per linear foot, and a new pump with a new pit at $800–$2,000 (Fixr, 2025).
How does an interior drain system work?
The specialist cuts a strip of concrete along the perimeter, digs a shallow trench beside the footing, lays perforated pipe in washed stone and patches the floor back over it. Water that would have pushed through the cove joint drops into the pipe instead and runs to the pit. Many installers also hang a dimpled plastic sheet on block walls so moisture running down the inside of the block reaches the trench.
It works with the water table instead of against it. On Crosby soil, which covers about a fifth of Marion County and holds water within two feet of the surface every spring, there is no way to keep the ground dry. The goal is to relieve the pressure and move that water out.
What Indiana's code expects of the pit
In most soils, the state's residential code calls for a sump pit at least 18 inches in diameter and 24 inches below the bottom of the floor, with openings that let the gravel under the slab drain into it. A house that drains by gravity to daylight is exempt (675 IAC 14-4.4, amending IRC R405.2.3). Older Indianapolis basements often have no pit, so the pit is part of the job.
Choosing the pump and the backup
- A cast-iron submersible pump sized for how much water the pit takes in, with a check valve on the discharge.
- A battery backup, which Fixr's 2025 guide puts at $150–$250 to add, for storms that knock out power.
- A sealed lid. Marion County is in EPA Radon Zone 1, and an open pit is a direct path for soil gas.
- An alarm that sounds if water rises past the pump's switch.
Where the water goes next
The discharge pipe has to leave the house and end in the yard or at a storm sewer. Citizens Energy Group asks that it never connect to the sanitary sewer. Run it far enough from the foundation that the water does not cycle straight back into the pit. Line-by-line prices are on the Indianapolis waterproofing cost page.
Questions homeowners ask
How long should a sump pump last?
It depends on the pump and how often it runs. A pump that cycles all spring wears faster than one that runs a few times a year. Test it each season by pouring a bucket of water into the pit and watching it start and shut off.
Does drain tile stop all moisture?
It manages liquid water at the base of the walls. Humidity is a separate issue, so many basements still need a dehumidifier in summer.
